Trails within about an hour of the city, longest first.

Portland is unusual among American cities in that its best-known trail starts inside the city limits. Forest Park carries the Wildwood Trail for about thirty miles without leaving town, and the Springwater Corridor and Banks-Vernonia State Trail run out of the metro area on old rail grades, which is why the list below is led by routes far longer than a typical day hike.

Most of what follows needs no pass at all. That changes the moment you cross into national forest land east of the city, where a Northwest Forest Pass is generally required at trailheads — and it changes again in winter, when the same parking areas become Sno-Parks and want a different permit entirely.

Every entry links to a page showing the route on a map, its steepest sustained grades, any parking mapped within 1.5 km, and — where a land manager has published a rule — who says whether you may ride a bike on it.
