Hikes near Bend

High-desert and Cascade trails within about an hour of Bend.

Bend sits on the dry side of the Cascades, and the practical consequence is a season that runs backwards from the west side of the state. Deschutes River trails and the high desert east of town are walkable in March when the Willamette valley is still a bog; the lakes and the higher Cascade routes hold snow well into summer and can be genuinely impassable when the map says otherwise.

It is also the part of Oregon where "can I ride this" is asked most often, and answered worst. Central Oregon has a dense network of shared trails with real, published restrictions that vary trail by trail — so each page here records legal bicycle access separately from how rideable the surface actually is, and names the authority behind the rule rather than guessing from a crowd-sourced tag.
